Oh, to
be in Brooklyn ...
How happy
I would be to stroll with my buddy Mar down the street to Bierkraft,
to sample cheeses, ogle hand-made chocolates laced with lager and
ale, and browse through bottle after bottle of wonderful, fresh beer.
Daphne
and Richard Scholz are making a dream come true, promoting the appreciation
of craft beer with specialty foods. Daphne, a former specialty food
buyer for Bloomingdales, brings a professional's perspicacity to the
selection of foodstuffs. Truly a gourmet assortment awaits customers
- from Poilane breads, to chocolates by Eric Girerd and Daniel Shklair,
to imported Italian salamis, American specialty cheeses, and fabulous
chocolates (see their notes below, or visit the website, www.bierkraft.com
for more details.)
.
I found
it difficult to spend less than $50, but I had to restrain myself
as I was only visiting for the weekend.
A lovely
gift would be an assortment of confections, such as the private label
chocolates made only for the store.
Tastings
are held every week, ranging from free beer samples, to chats with
cheesemakers from the region.
If you
can get to NYC, make the trek to Brooklyn - it's well worth the trip.
From
their website, www.bierkraft.com:
For
chocolate lovers, we are proud to offer Dolfin, Galler, Nirvana, Valrhona,
Green & Black, Scharffen Berger, Hachez Cocoa D'Arriba, Antica Dolceria
and more. Bakers will adore the unsweetened, bittersweet and semi-sweet
baking chocolate from Scharffen Berger as well as the Simpson & Vail
sugars from Mauritius and the European style butter from Vermont.
Among
the gourmet delicacies at Bierkraft, you will find Molinari salametti
(a delightfully dry little salami), Boquerones (white anchovies from
Spain), salmon pinwheels (a strip of Scottish-style smoked salmon
encircling scallion cream cheese), crackers, cookies, spreads, salsas,
Martelli pasta, Peet's coffee and Zapp's potato chips.
We
also offer a fabulous array of non-alcoholic beverages like Fentiman's
sodas, Virgil's Bavarian brewed root beer and Voss water.
Our
beer selection has been lovingly assembled by Richard Scholz and Andrew
Ager, and features brews from Ethiopia (Bedele), Harlem (Sugar Hill),
Japan (Hitachino) and everywhere that makes great beers.
Bierkraft
carries over 150 Belgian beers and a thirst-quenching assortment of
American microbrews in addition to an array of international ales
and lagers. The fellas like to brew for sampling purposes (we refer
to the backyard as "The Brewery") so don't forget to ask for a free
taste of the house brew when you stop by.
We
also assemble gift baskets, are happy to deliver locally (NYC) and
host on premises tastings on Tuesdays at 7 PM. Tastings feature a
speaker and a sampling of beers and complimentary cheeses. Treat yourself
to the Bierkraft experience-drop in for a nibble, a sip and a warm,
friendly shopping experience.
